One of our own

June 25, 2008

Nice interview on NPR this morning with collector Aaron Levine. (wife Barbara is not in the interview but I wanted to mention her because she’s very knowledgeable – and charming).

A good point to develop on was the lack of Americans at Basel this year. The art market as a whole (from collectors of objets d’art at regional auctions to those picking up an $80 million Monet) is 50% American, but that is not where half of the money is coming from. It’s the money from Russia and China (secondarily, UAE and India, too) flowing through the UK and the rest of Europe that’s feeding us.

I’ll say it again, we will all be alive to see the center of the art market pass from New York to London.

The Difference between Gallerina and Gallerista

June 24, 2008

Some significant terminology to note from the DCML piece was Jow’s correct use of the term “Gallerista”, the feminine form of Gallerist. There is a difference in the art market between the Gallerina and the Gallerista (or Dealer).

Gallerina has some negative connotations; or, it can also appear as ultra glamorous (Marc Jacobs did a Gallerina line)…

Gallerista is a totally different game – that’s why when you visit the gallery you’ll see my high heels abandoned to the bottom right corner of my desk, replaced by flats, with a phone to each ear, while typing – and very approachable.

Special thanks to Tiffany Jow, especially for THE BEST photo caption ever, and also to Pete Muller, great photograph, much appreciated.

Did you know…

June 13, 2008

that most of the major art theft occurs because of 2 specific groups of bandits: one called the Balkan Bandits and the other, a ring of Irish thieves. Once the art is lifted from regional museums, galleries and less secure spaces the work is used as leverage in arms and drug deals. Those individuals who track the lost art and help negotiate it’s return are hired by the insurance companies who have underwritten the collection, not the museums.

But in this most recent case, the work probably wasn’t insured like the first time… since these last works were prints and can’t compare to a trophy from Isabella, it’s probably just local thieves who have the work in Brazil. Soon they are going to freak out, leave them in a bathroom stall and the prints will get water damaged and have to be repaired – it happens in France all the time

One of my favorite tales from France is of the Italian glazier who stole the Mona Lisa in 1911 while working at the Louvre fitting protective glass into frames. Though, I feel stoic act of repatriation, when he got the work back to Italy (feeling like a national hero) and tried to resell it 2 years later, everyone was like “Ummmm, Vincenzo, listen. We gotta talk. I kinda don’t have a viable client for this…” (he was arrested and it was later returned.)
