See!

May 28, 2008

I was raised as an art historian and critic, but I became a dealer because I can’t write essays.  Especially academic and insightful theory that dominates this year’s Whitney Biennial catalogue – it’s difficult to get through.  (But you already know that if you read this blog; I stick with snarky and insightful)

And on the subject of the Whitney Biennial – after I visited the exhibition in March, I claimed that out of all the works, 4 floors of competition, Omer Fast’s, The Casting, was the best. So listen up all you nonbelievers out there, this month’s ARTnews reports that Fast won this year’s Bucksbaum Award for The Casting.

The award, established in 2000 by Whitney trustee Melva Bucksbaum, recognizes an artist participating in the Biennial – he won $100k and a solo at the Whitney. Obviously Melva and I need to meet soon, since we’re such tastemakers!

That Voice Sounds Familiar

May 22, 2008

Have you visited the Corcoran’s exhibition The American Evolution: A History Through Art and noticed the familiar voice on the audio tour? This month’s ARTnews reveals that it’s the voice of Project Runway’s Tim Gunn. Gunn, who was a BFA graduate of the Corcoran College of Art & Design in 1976, has now re-affiliated himself with the institution, giving lectures and lending his voice. Gunn goes on to further support DC’s art community in ARTnews by discussing his donation of a work by Anne Truitt, his art school inspiration and senior thesis advisor, to the Hirshhorn after learning of her retrospective there in ’09.

I wonder if “make it work” or “this worries me” was coined by Truitt as she reviewed his student work…
